Delta Mu Zeta's Community Service Projects
Z-HOPE: Zetas Helping Other People Excel through Mind, Body,
and Spirit
Since 1920, the legacy of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. has been firmly secured in the sorority's service to community and all humanity. Building on that legacy, we have adopted a new national service program that is viable for the 21st century, and more importantly, meets the critical societal needs that we currently face. The program is Z-HOPE: Zetas Helping Other People Excel (through Mind, Body and Spirit). Z-HOPE is a holistic, multidimensional outreach program. One of the primary goals of Z-HOPE is to enhance, cultivate and empower participants to develop health-promoting lifestyle choices in all stages of their lifes. It reaches from young to old, from prenatal to geriatric. The five major populations are women, youth, seniors, men and international women.
Delta Mu Zeta’s Z-HOPE Activities
When our International Grand President Barbara C. Moore unveiled Z-HOPE in January of 2002, Delta Mu Zeta members rolled up their sleeves and went to work with the enthusiasm of 100,000-foot soldiers. We raised money through silent auctions, pledges donated by friends and family members as well as funds given to this extremely important cause by our very own chapter members. Our chapter enjoys promoting Z-HOPE and will continue our efforts until we can touch as many lives as the Lord will allow. Each chapter across the nation was charged by President Moore to actively go out into our respective communities and bring Z-HOPE to the populous. Delta Mu Zeta members have zealously done just that.
At the 2006 Boule in Hollywood Florida, Delta Mu Zeta was named, for the second consecutive Boule, one of the premier chapters in Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. for our support and participation in Z-HOPE . Internationally, DMZ has provided school supplies, funded the construction of a village water well, and supported a battered women's shelter. We've also donated magazines to local libraries and purchased medical health kits for AIDS patients in Ghana, Africa. Locally, we’ve donated school supplies to one of Harlem's public elementary schools, as well as conducted Z-HOPE workshops for men, women and youth with themes to help them improve their lives. The March of Dimes and Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. have a long standing partnership in the fight to prevent birth defects. The March of Dimes’ largest fundraiser is WalkAmerica : The Walk That Saves Babies.
WalkAmerica supports lifesaving research and community programs that save innocent babies from birth defects, low birth weight and infant death. Since its beginning in 1970, WalkAmerica has raised more than $1 billion to help save millions of babies from death or disability.
Delta Mu Zeta has been a strong supporter of Walk America for over 15 years and have raised over $15,000.00 in pledges and donations in that time span for this worthy cause.
"Every year, more than 470,000 babies arrive early, before their bodies are ready for birth, sometimes before they are able to survive," says Dr. Jennifer L. Howse, president of the March of Dimes, which is spearheading the drive for more research on prematurity. Citing premature birth as the #1 health risk for America's newborns, the March of Dimes has named November Prematurity Awareness Month to draw attention to this growing common, costly and serious public health problem. Delta Mu Zeta has participated in the campaign annually by bringing the message of this serious condition to congregations in the New York City area on Prematurity Awareness Sunday.
