Highlights


The members of Delta Mu Zeta chapter work very hard to promote a positive image and to be an example others can follow both in our organization as well as in our personal lives. The following are some accomplishments of the chapter as a whole and our members individually that we think are worth mentioning!

Chapter Accomplishments
  • Delta Mu Zeta Chapter was the first chapter Nation wide to purchase a Water Well in Ghana West Africa in April of 2003.
  • Delta Mu Zeta Chapter in conjunction with Mr. Gary Cooper donated 15 computers, 4 printers, 1 scanner, 1 laptop and a host of software that was shipped to Ghana in April of 2006.
  • Delta Mu Zeta shipped 550 hard cover test books (Math, Science and Reading) to Ghana in October of 2005
  • Okay so lets see during 2002-2006 DMZ did or obtained the following:
    • a 501c3 status
    • setup an award winning website ( regional award)
    • Won back to back National ZHOPE awards (2004 and 2006)
    • Won back to back Regional ZHOPE awards (2003 and 2005)
    • Hosted the 2004 NYS Leadership Conference
    • Purchased 2 wells for ZHOPE
    • Restablished the Archonette club
  • Delta Mu Zeta chapter won first place at the Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. 2004 Boule convention in the Z-HOPE Premier Chapter 26-50 category
  • Delta Mu Zeta chapter won first place at the Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. 2004 Boule convention for the most Z-HOPE programs completed
  • Delta Mu Zeta chapter received a Merit Award at the 2004 Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. Boule convention in the Public Relations: Direct Mailing category
  • Delta Mu Zeta chapter won first place at the 2005 Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. Atlantic Region Conference in the Public Relations: Website category
  • Delta Mu Zeta chapter’s Amicae of Manhatten won first place at the 2005 Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. Atlantic Regional Conference for the most completed Z-HOPE programs
  • Delta Mu Zeta chapter won second place at the 2005 Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. Atlantic Regional Conference for the most contributions to the National Educational Foundation
  • Delta Mu Zeta chapter presented the 2005 Pamela Profit Finer Womanhood Scholarship Award to Yurico Soriano of Samuel Gompers High School
  • Delta Mu Zeta chapter presented the 2005 Ruth Walcott Incentive Awards to Abena Donkor and Tanee Hazelwood of Samuel Gompers High School
  • Delta Mu Zeta chapter awarded Anissa Walker the 2005 Undergraduate Zeta of the Year award
  • Delta Mu Zeta chapter awarded the Amicae of Manhatten chapter of the 2005 Amicae of the year award
  • Delta Mu Zeta chapter awarded Rhonda Hurdle-Taylor the 2005 Woman of the Year award
Individual Member Accomplishments

  • Michele Greene was elected during the 2004 Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc. Boule convention the National 3rd Vice President
  • Michelle Steven won the Delta Mu Zeta chapter 2005 Zeta of the Year award
  • Latasha Johnson was presented a Delta Mu Zeta chapter 2005 Zeta Appreciation award
  • Blanche Jordan was presented a Delta Mu Zeta chapter 2005 Zeta Appreciation award
  • Michele Greene was hired by the Federal Reserve Bank of NY
  • Valerie M.C. Hollingsworth was promoted to Director of Inforce Systems at New York Life Insurance Company.
  • Robin Hunter-Buskey was elected to the North Carolina Medical Board’s Federations Board of Directors
  • Latasha Johnson was promoted to Director of the Harlem Children’s Zone Countee Cullen Beacon Program
  • Patrice Ward was awarded the 2005 NY State Scholarship
  • Patrice Ward completed her Masters in Education studies

Transitions

When a woman becomes a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., she is a member for life. When a Zeta passes away, she transitions to Triumphant Zeta status. Here we remember some Triumphant Zetas who were members of Delta Mu Zeta at the time of their passing.

Triumphant Zeta Albertine Lancaster  transitioned on April 24, 2007. Albertine became a Zeta through Epsilon Chapter located at Hunter College. Albertine was a Clinical Psychiatric Social Worker. She was a life member and a Zeta for over 55 years at the time of her death.

Triumphant Zeta Frances Spooner  was born in Washington DC March 3 ,1927. She attended Howard University and was initiated at Alpha Chapter over 50 years ago. Professionally she was an educator and guidance counselor with the Board of Education of NYC for over 30 years working primarily in the Harlem Community at IS 136 and IS 195. As President of DMZ, Soror Spooner contributed to the chapter by increasing membership,streamling and tightening the financial fiber of the chapter and last but not least she gave the younger sorors a chance to learn and mature in Zeta. It wa this attitude that is one of the contributing factors to the success of present day DMZ. Soror Spooner left this life in March 2006.

Triumphant  Zeta Burma Hicks transitioned in September 2005. Burma became a Zeta through Epsilon chapter, served two terms as President of Delta Mu Zeta chapter and was a Life Member of the sorority. Burma was a teacher at Evander Childs High School.

Triumphant  Zeta Lorraine Macon transistioned in June 2005. Lorraine was a social worker before retiring to change careers to become a registered nurse. She was initiated into Zeta through Delta Mu Zeta chapter, was a Life Member of the sorority and had served Zeta for over 40-years at the time of her death.

Triumphant  Zeta Shirley Franklin transitioned on January 25, 2005. Shirley was an accomplished musician and graduated from Julliard School of Music, as well as her masters from Columbia University. She founded the Franklin School of Music, where hundreds of students studied the piano under her direction. Shirley was initiated into Zeta through Epsilon chapter before transferring into Delta Mu Zeta.

Triumphant  Zeta Clara M. Johnson transitioned on October 12, 2004. Clara, a graduate of Medgar Evers College, worked for the New York Telephone Company for forty years prior to her retirement. She served Zeta for over ten years prior to her death.

Triumphant  Zeta Kathleen Francis Carter transitioned on September 3, 2002. Kathleen was accepted into the first class of women enrolled at City College and often worked three jobs to fund her tuition. She later became an educator and a guidance counselor and served the City of New York for over 50-years. Kathleen was initiated into Zeta through Delta Mu Zeta and served as the chapter Parliamentarian and Elections chairperson and was a Life Member of the sorority. Kathleen was one of the original organizers of Delta Mu Zeta’s adopt a school program with Samuel Gompers High School in the Bronx.

Triumphant  Zeta Linda Linton transitioned on August 31, 2002. Linda served as a Principal of Harlem’s PS 123, the same school she attended as a child. Among her many academic and professional education achievements, she was the Special Assistant to the Assistant Secretary of Elementary and Secondary Education for the United States Department of Education in Washington, DC from 1987-1989. Linda was initiated into Zeta through Delta Mu Zeta, was one of the original organizers of DMZ’s Samuel Gompers High School adopt a school program and was a Life Member of the sorority.

Triumphant  Zeta Lillian D. Mitchell transitioned on November 20, 2000. Lillian was a graduate of Lehman College and retired after 22-years of service to the New York City Housing Authority. During her life, she was a dedicated member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. who transferred into Delta Mu Zeta and also served as a representative to the Pan New York Hellenic Council.

Triumphant  Zeta Helen Fletcher transitioned on September 21, 2000. Initiated into Zeta through Epsilon chapter, Helen was also a Charter Member of Delta Mu Zeta chapter and a Life Member of the sorority, She was also an educator.

Triumphant  Zeta Ruth Walcott transitioned on June 15, 2000. Ruth was a Charter Member of Delta Mu Zeta chapter, a chapter treasurer and also a Life Member of the sorority. Delta Mu Zeta created the Ruth Walcott Incentive Award in 2005 at Samuel Gompers High School in the Bronx to continue her commitment to the young women who attended the school. Ruth worked a social worker and employee of the New York City Housing Authority. She was one of the few black students allowed to attend Manhattan’s prestigious Hunter High School back then, and is also honored with a place in the Hunter College Alumni Hall of Fame.

Triumphant  Zeta Marion Eloise Thompson transitioned on March 20, 2000. Marion received her bachelor’s degree from Hunter College and was a summa cum laude graduate of Columbia University’s Social Work graduate program. She was initiated into Zeta through Epsilon chapter before becoming a member of Delta Mu Zeta. At the time of her death, Marion had served Zeta for over 50-years.

Triumphant  Zeta Adele Armstrong transitioned on July 22, 1999. A Life Member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., Adele served the sorority for over 50-years. She was a graduate of Xavier University and was an educator and social worker.

Triumphant  Zeta Pamela Profit transitioned November 11, 1996 . Pamela was intiated into Zeta through Delta Mu Zeta and reorganized the chapter’s Archonettes program and was also a Life Member of the sorority. She was an educator for the City of New York and worked closely with the teacher’s union during her career. Delta Mu Zeta remembers Pam by awarding a scholarship in her name annually to a student at Samuel Gompers High School in the Bronx. At the time of her death, Pam had served Zeta for 14-years.

Triumphant  Zeta Ruth Bishop transitioned in the early 1990’s. Ruth transferred into Delta Mu Zeta and served as chapter President from 1976-7978. She was an educator for the City of New York, and at the time of her death Ruth had served Zeta for over 30-years.
