Valerie Hollingsworth became a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc, Delta Mu Zeta Chapter on May 17th 1982.
Since 1982, Soror Hollingsworth has been consistently and deeply involved in all aspects of her chapter's activities. She was named the Special Events Coordinator for her chapter within 6 months of her joining the Sorority and served in that capacity for over 8 consecutive years. One of the main responsibilities of this position was becoming Walk America Captain for the chapter. During her tenure as Team Captain, the chapter has raised over $10,000.00 for this worthy cause.
Soror Hollingsworth has been elected chapter Tamias, chapter Second Anti-Basileus and chapter Basileus. From 1990-1993, Soror Hollingsworth had the distinction of being the first and only soror in the Atlantic Region to be elected and serve as chapter Tamias, New York State Tamias, and the Atlantic Regional Tamias simultaneously. She handled these three positions during her tenures professionally, by ensuring the following: budgets were created and adhered to, vouchers were handled properly, detailed reports were written and distributed to all the respective constituencies and proper accounting records were maintained for the respective levels. At the end of each respective term, Soror Hollingsworth conducted proper transitions with each of her successors.
In 1994, Soror Hollingsworth was elected Basileus of Delta Mu Zeta Chapter. During her tenure, she appointed a committee to develop a Standard Operation Procedural Manual for the chapter. Upon completion of this manual, she distributed it to both seasoned and new incoming members of the chapter. She also trained her officers and appointees in the duties and responsibilities of their respective jobs. She encouraged open communication between the Executive Board and the body by requiring written reports from the officers at each meeting and allowing all members (old and new) a chance to voice their opinions and to work on any committees, which interested them.
Soror Hollingsworth instituted the Members Over 80 program for those sorors in the chapter who reached the age of 80 years old. Her philosophy was that these Sorors who lived to this age had served ZETA the majority of their adult lives and deserved ZETA to serve and thank them for all their years of service. Once a Soror reaches 80 years old, the chapter pays their National, Regional and State dues for the duration of their lives. We currently have 7 sorors who are covered under this initiative
Additionally, Soror Hollingsworth has served the chapter in the following appointments: Chapter Phylacter, Finer Womanhood Luncheon Ticket Chair, and as of Fall 2002, Z-HOPE Chair. Under her chairmanship, the chapter has received numerous Z-HOPE awards including the Premier Chapter Award at Boulé 2004 in Los Angeles and Boule 2006 in Hollywood Florida. In this particular position, as in all her previous ones, she has excelled. Soror Hollingsworth has also had the honor of serving on the following National committees: National Resolutions and Recommendations and the National Credentials Committee. The New York State Director also appointed her to the position of New York State Protocol Chairman.
In 1995, Delta Mu Zeta chapter selected Soror Hollingsworth as the Atlantic Regional Co-Conference Marshal. In this capacity, she worked closely with Soror R. Buskey (Co-Conference Marshal), the host chapter (Delta Mu Zeta) and the Regional Director. As a result of her efforts, the conference was held at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in New York City. As Co-Conference Marshal, Soror Hollingsworth's main goal was to produce one of the most memorable conferences the Atlantic Region ever had. In order to achieve this, she and her fellow co-marshal introduced the use of walkie-talkies and a standard workbook binder. The walkie-talkies allowed the point persons to manage the specific logistics of the hotel and remain in constant communication with each other. The workbooks contained all the Regional Reports, eliminating the need to distribute reports during a session. These two ideas were so successful, that they were used at the 1996 Boulé and are still being used at Boulé's, and various Regional/State Conferences across the country today.
Because of the indelible impression that Soror Hollingsworth left on any and all sorors who attended the 1995 Atlantic Regional Conference, in the fall of 1996, the 21st International Grand Basileus, Soror Dr. Barbara W. Carpenter, appointed her Atlantic Regional Director. Once again, Soror Hollingsworth was challenged with working in two similar capacities at the same time. As a testimony to her organizational/leadership skills, she served as Chapter Basileus and Regional Director until her chapter term ended in 1998.
Soror Hollingsworth worked extremely hard and put in long hours as the Regional Director. Her number one goal was making the Atlantic Region the number one Region in the nation. By 2000, the Atlantic Region reached this goal. At the Boulé` in Philadelphia, PA, the Atlantic Region and their Director took home over 11 National awards which included several of the following awards: Most Outstanding Regional Website, Most Outstanding Contributor to the NEF, Highest Number of Member Contributions to the National Capital Campaign, Highest Number of New Chapters Chartered in a fiscal year (11 chapters chartered from Sept 1999 to June 2000, one of which was an undergraduate chapter in Maryland with a charter line of 25) and the Most Outstanding Regional Director in the Nation. In addition, Soror Hollingsworth instituted a method of review and accountability for her State Directors, helped establish a better rapport with the Amicae and created a stronger bond with her undergraduate constituency. These legacies are still remembered by many in the region today.
The culmination of Boulé 2000 saw Soror Hollingsworth's landslide election to Chairman of the National Executive Board of the Sorority. In this position, she served on the financial committee, developed agendas, planned yearly board meetings, chaired those meetings and worked closely with several other National Committees. She ran unopposed for a second term (2002-2004) as Chair of the Board and was re-elected in New Orleans. Soror Hollingsworth served in this capacity until 2004 when her term ended.
When her term as Chair of the Executive Board ended, Soror Hollingsworth was appointed to the Zeta Organizational Leadership (ZOL) Committee where she still currently serves. Her responsibilities as a National Trainer and a member of this cutting edge committee were to help formulate the ZOL class curriculum, conduct Training sessions during the Leadership Training Conference, to train the Regional ZOL trainers and review the assignments submitted by class participants seeking National Certification.
Currently Soror Hollingsworth is serving as Basileus of her beloved chapter for a second stint after serving in this capacity over 8 years ago and she has a new set of goals to achieve. She is ready, willing and able to give it her best shot and take Delta Mu Zeta Chapter to higher heights.
